For many years, Global Timber has been supplying manufacturers worldwide with the finest hardwood for furniture, flooring and other finished wood products. The company's success, however, goes beyond prompt delivery, excellent quality and competitive pricing. With its profound understanding of the industry and strong supply network worldwide, Global Timber guarantees strict compliance with international environmental regulations.

"We spend significant resources setting up our due diligence system," says Peter Bæk, managing director of Global Timber. "We make sure that our suppliers comply with the laws in their countries. This is our obligation, and this is how it should be."

With certifications from organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, Global Timber imports and exports raw hardwood across more than 40 countries.

"Our focus on tropical hardwood species has taken us to the remote and difficult areas of Africa, South America and Southeast Asia, where a lot of true industry knowledge is required," Bæk says. "We have been working with our suppliers for many years and understand their operations very well."

To capture the growing demand in Asia, Global Timber is expanding into the region. It established a representative office in Kuala Lumpur last year to initially support its business in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Global Timber expects the office to grow into an independent subsidiary supporting its regional operation. The company also welcomes potential suppliers and other local players as it plans to set up a representative office in China in the next couple of years. Global Timber, for example, has started participating in trade fairs in the country to better understand its business culture.

"We need to focus 100 per cent when we go into China, the largest market of all," Bæk says. "We would need local expertise and partners who share our high regard for quality."
