The body of a man believed to have been involved in a violent clash last week between security personnel and opposition party supporters has been found.

The body of the man, identified as Rully Madayat, was discovered by villagers on Friday morning near a railway track in Tasikmalaya, about 200 kilometres from Jakarta, an Indonesian newspaper reported.

Quoting police sources, the Jayakarta said the 23-year-old student from Malang, Central Java, was wearing opposition Indonesian Democratic Party colours and had a party card.

He was believed to have been a supporter of embattled opposition party chairman Megawati Sukarnoputri, who was ousted at the weekend by a government-backed rebel party congress in Medan, North Sumatra.

Controversy over the rebel congress erupted into violence last Thursday when baton-wielding police and soldiers charged about 3,000 Megawati supporters during a march in central Jakarta.

The Jayakarta quoted a morgue employee at Tasikmalaya Hospital as saying Rully's body was covered with injuries inflicted by blunt instruments. The report also said he suffered a gash to the head.

A senior Megawati faction official, Alex Litaay, said yesterday the party hoped to confirm the report today.
