TO become effective managers who can inspire others in their organisations, individuals need a proper combination of people skills.

Dale Carnegie's Leadership Training for Managers programme offers to teach skills ranging from problem-solving to motivating people.

This programme and many other Dale Carnegie Training courses are offered in Hong Kong by John L. Hei Associates.

 Malcolm Phillips, the manager of Dale Carnegie Training in Hong Kong, said the leadership course 'tends to focus on practical results'.

 Mr Phillips, a trainer himself, said participants learnt through practice so that business concepts they studied could be put to use on real issues.

 The course, held every quarter for groups of 15 to 20, attracted mainly middle managers, he said. 'This course is not just theory. It is practical, hands-on training designed to produce results. Each skill you acquire will have an impact on job performance,' Mr Phillips said, adding that results gained by learning those skills could be measured.

  The programme has 15 modules, each focusing on one specific aspect or skill. Participants are involved in instruction through practice, group discussion and application. Then, using a spaced-learning approach, each skill is reinforced with application until it becomes part of a person's personal management style.

 By building on skills that individuals already have, training enables people to maximise their leadership potential.

 The training can also be tailor-made to organisations' needs, their culture and total quality initiatives, developing leadership skills that dovetail with management's vision for corporate growth. Measurable improvements can be seen in building cross-functional teams, accountability, delegation, motivation, long-term planning, making decisions, solving problems, aligning culture to vision, and maximising team performance to achieve goals.

 Each training session contains practical application projects that correspond to the participant's responsibilities.

Another programme, The Dale Carnegie Course offers the widest scope of all courses.

  Mr Phillips said: 'It is ideal for anyone who wants to improve self-confidence, communication, and leadership skills. It is also for people who want to know how they can control stress and anxiety in the workplace.'   About six programmes are conducted annually and they attract people ranging from those in associate levels to middle-managers, Mr Phillips said.

  The course is in three segments, each focusing on an area of personal development.

  Programme materials provided to participants include, a participant's manual, the Dale Carnegie classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, and The Golden Book, a condensed, pocket reference covering the basics of human relations and stress management. The first four sessions focus on building confidence through a series of presentation exercises, developing new attitudes in business and social relationships, and setting and achieving personal and professional goals.

 The next four sessions touch on motivation, expressing clearly and confidently, and getting co-operation by building team-work.

 And the remaining sessions focus on leadership, effective communication and motivation through human relations, changing people's attitude without causing any resentment, leading and participating in meetings.

  This course also took into account practical issues, Mr Phillips said.

  The course inspires people to discover the 'source of their power'. This is achieved by, among other things, building self-confidence, so they approach projects with conviction; improving self esteem, so they trust their own ideas and respect ideas of others; controlling stress, and improving listening skills which builds trust.

 These skills allow all types of people to discover their hidden strengths and unleash their true potential.
