I refer to Christine Loh's letter headlined, 'Ban smoking in all confined public spaces', which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on June 21. The health of an individual should not be compromised by the fear that the banning of cigarette advertising would affect the livelihood of a certain sector of the population. Ms Loh expresses concern for people who would not be able to adapt to a banning of cigarette smoking in public spaces. Her concerns are misplaced. No one is depriving people of the right to smoke if they wish. They can lock themselves in their rooms and smoke to their heart's content. However, those who choose not to smoke, should be able to avoid having to endure passive smoking. I would strongly urge the Government to implement a no-smoking policy in all public places. This change is necessary and should be implemented swiftly. We do not have the luxury of time to allow others to adapt to changes gradually at the expense of others who would be affected by passive smoking. H.Y. LAM Kowloon
