Loose change will jangle to the tune of transition next year as all coins are given new designs to mark the change of sovereignty. The seven new coins, identical in shape, colour and weight to those in circulation, will be introduced by the Monetary Authority before June 30 next year. It has not been decided whether there will be one new design or seven. In addition to the new designs, the Monetary Authority is also working on a souvenir solid gold coin to celebrate the handover. Meanwhile, China is to issue three coins, two gold and one silver, on Monday. The coins will say 'Smooth transition, long-term prosperity' in English and Chinese, and bear pictures of the Tiananmen Rostrum and a book representing the post-1997 law.
