One of the world's leading educational psychologists is to help the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Education to research teaching effectiveness in the local setting.

The programme will replicate previous studies by Professor Herbert Marsh, pro-Vice-Chancellor and research professor of the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and then apply them to the local situation.

The research, scheduled to be launched in the next academic year, will focus on Professor Marsh's instrument of students' evaluations in university teaching and the feedback strategies he developed for teachers to improve their effectiveness.

'The previous research was based on the findings in Western university settings and we are going to see if they are valid here in Hong Kong,' said Professor Marsh, whose Students' Evaluation of Education Effectiveness Questionnaire was one of the top three most popular instruments worldwide for the purpose.

The questionnaire, which makes up most of CUHK's latest students' evaluation, was distributed to all final-year students two months ago.

It collects students' feedback on the teachers' performance in organisation, teaching enthusiasm and group interaction, and reflects the teachers' strengths and weaknesses.
