A distraught widower wept yesterday as he heard how his diabetic wife was crushed under a train after falling off the platform at Central MTR station.

Mother of three Ella Wong Wai-kwan was almost cut in two when she toppled on to the tracks on her way to see doctors about recent dizzy spells.

Driver Kwok Ka-keung told an inquest how he saw Wong, 36, fall off the platform as he approached at 15-16 km/h.

'I saw a lady falling on to the track as if she was stumbling. I immediately braked, tooted the horn and notified control,' said Mr Kwok.

'But it takes the distance of about three train compartments to come to a stop. I was almost at the platform.' Commuter Cheung Wai-fong, who raised the alarm, told of her horror as she saw Wong keel over shortly before 8 am on November 20 last year.

'I was frightened. I approached the track to have a look. I saw the woman was lying on one of the rails,' said Ms Cheung.
