Take a degree that'll boost safety at work

Benson Chao

The Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong (OLI) is launching a new degree course in September to boost occupational health and workplace safety.

The Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences) in Health and Safety is being offered by OLI's Centre for Continuing and Community Education in collaboration with the Curtin University of Technology in Australia.

Project manager Ha Yuen-yung said the course would allow workers with sub-degree qualifications in the health field to upgrade their professional status.

'The new programme serves as a conversion course for students with a high diploma or other sub-degree qualification in the disciplines related to occupational health, workplace safety, health and safety practice law,' Ms Ha said.

Students who have completed sub-degree programmes - such as occupational hygiene, noise and vibration control - offered by local universities will be granted exemptions in the new degree.

Curtin University will screen applicants before judging exemption percentages. Work experience also will be taken into account.

The course will cover workers' compensation and rehabilitation, occupational health and safety management, health and safety practice, and health and safety economics.

The duration is three years' full-time study or six years' part-time.

The OLI will provide laboratories and administrative assistance.

'We expect the first semester to be quite intensive and, with advanced credits from Curtin, some students may be able to finish in two years,' Ms Ha said.
