Faye or fey? The Collins English Language Dictionary explanation of the word 'fey' reads: 'Someone who is fey behaves in a vague, strange and rather silly way.' Many may think the description sums up singer Faye Wong Ching-man pretty well.
Vague and strange she may usually be but silly she is not. Undeniably, Wong is an enigma in showbiz circles where artists try to keep their fans happy, never miss a chance for publicity and stick to the tried and true with their songs.
Wong, on the other hand, gets away with scolding fans who pay good money to see her in concert, shuns publicity to the extent of hiding out in Beijing, and produces alternative music and sings songs without lyrics.
Despite this, the public and her fans alike just lap it up and ask for more. The woman has to be doing something right.
But do not try asking Wong what - in fact, do not try asking her any personal questions, because she will not answer them.
She is behaving as she sees fit and she is making the music that she likes. And that is about all that matters to her, not leading trends or breaking into the international market, says the Beijing native.
'My ambitions are not that great,' said Wong, 27, in a rare concession to answering questions from the press. 'I just want to make what I feel is good music. What kind of effect or result it has, should evolve naturally. Whatever effect it will have, it will have.
