Solving problems was clearly the motivating factor for 80 fresh graduates of the Hong Kong Technical College (Tsing Yi), who displayed their works in a recent exhibition.
The college's hall was split into two for the graduation show: one half each for graphic design and industrial design students.
Wing-see, 23, an industrial design student, said the essence of a good design lay in the search for a solution to a specific problem.
'I found that children suffering from muscular dystrophy had a short attention span while undergoing physiotherapy. So I designed an electronic teaching aid for them to play with while they exercised their arm muscles,' Wing-see said.
Her classmate Colin Woo Man-fai went even further with a project that tackled a problem that could mean the difference between life and death.
Inspired by his fireman-brother's dangerous work, Man-fai invented a special equipment to ensure greater safety.
'My brother told me that one of the most dangerous things about his job was the possibility of uniforms catching fire during a rescue operation. So I invented a personal safety system, which emits fire-dousing foam on the body when it is turned on,' said the 22-year-old Man-fai, one of the four best design students in the exhibition.
