NEW tax commissioner Wong Ho-sang has quickly moved to put his personal stamp on the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).

His message to the corporate and professional community is clear: the IRD will be increasingly vigilant in scrutinising the corporate sector, modelling itself more closely on the Australian and US tax departments.

Mr Wong also outlined a strategy which has prompted tax experts to dub him the 'anti-avoidance commissioner'.

In an interview with Business Post earlier this week, Mr Wong made clear the IRD would tighten up on inaccurate tax returns.

The average man or woman in the street has nothing to fear from this get-tough approach, but corporates using elaborate vehicles to avoid tax which previously averted the scrutiny of the tax-man should beware - the IRD is devoting more and more resources to field audits.

Cash businesses are also set to come under much closer inspection from authorities.
