Crippled robbery hero Yeung Hoi-keung will today be told how much the ex gratia compensation for his injury will be. The Deputy Secretary for Security, Carrie Yau Tsang Ka-lai, will meet Mr Yeung at the hospital to tell him the decision made by an inter-departmental working group. Mr Yeung's legs and left hand were paralysed after his spine was injured in a shooting in 1986 when he helped a department store worker chase a robber in Hunghom. Mr Yeung, a truck driver and part-time martial arts instructor, was awarded only $797,260 by a court for his injuries in May. He had expected $6 million. Mr Yeung, who has obtained an award from the Governor for his bravery, hopes the payment will help him hire a carer at home and support his children's education. The Security branch said the amount could not be disclosed until they had talked to Mr Yeung.
