Ma Wan fishermen have demanded $90 million compensation after Saturday's oil spill which they claim has ruined their livelihood. More than 100 registered fishermen and Ma Wan residents went to forward their demands at the Tsuen Wan District Board offices yesterday, saying fishing in the North Lantau area could be affected indefinitely. The fishermen said thousands of fishing cages had been destroyed. The spill came from the Philippine-registered National Pride container ship which arrived in the territory on Friday. Signs of negligence warranting civil action would be reported to the fishermen, the Marine Department said.
