Those who wish to develop their taste for traditional Chinese culture should make note of an opera treat to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival. Two Cantonese opera companies have received grants worth more than $47,000 to organise festive events in the New Territories. The Wah Fai Cantonese Opera Association will receive $37,014 for the organisation of a Cantonese opera, while the Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Social Centre for the Elderly will receive $10,600 to hold a concert of Cantonese songs. The funds have been earmarked by the Regional Council's Yuen Long District Committee out of the $1.43 million allocated to it by the Regional Council for district-wide festival activities in 1996-97. A Regional Services Department spokesman said both programmes were popular annual events in Yuen Long. In addition, the Yuen Long District Board has approved further subsidies of $15,610 and $8,730 respectively to the organisers of the two festival events. Inform your family and friends about these programmes - and enjoy a night out at the opera.
