Hong Kong's portable electronics industry will get a boost from a $1.5 million research project at City University of Hong Kong.

  The project is to get the highest single Research Grants Council award this year.

   Dr Chan Yan-cheong, associate professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering, said the research was to develop crucial technology for the territory, in particular silicon chips for circuit boards used in pagers, notebook computers and mobile telephones.

  'At the moment, most of the local companies producing these products have to rely on imports from the United States and Japan,' Dr Chan said.

  The university would collaborate with two or three local businesses, so that the fruits of the research could be used by local industry.

  During the past five years, Dr Chan has received almost $9.3 million in research grants, mainly from the Government and the university.

  The latest project will be completed in three years.

  He said most of the $1.5 million from the Research Grants Council would be spent on materials and equipment.

   'Three students have already approached me to see if they can be of help in the research,' he said. 'They know that this technology is new in Hong Kong, and such work will be helpful for their career.'   Two full-time research assistants would be employed, Dr Chan said.

  'Hong Kong's manpower is very expensive. The only way the territory can maintain our competitiveness in the international market is to add value to our products. The higher value added, the more revenue we get. That's why this technology is important at this stage of our technological development.'
