A 79-year-old widow who was evicted from her home faced a further blow yesterday when one of her beloved 34 pet cats died trying to escape its would-be rescuers. Chik Wong Lai-mei called in police to help her recover the cats from her rundown North Point flat yesterday. But she left before one of them was killed and another injured when they jumped six storeys to escape the strangers trying to capture them. The High Court ordered Mrs Chik to quit the flat because she owed a year's rent. Before police arrived, Mrs Chik said she began keeping cats three years ago when her husband died. 'A black and white stray came to my door every day and kept the mice away. I decided to keep it because I believed it was a compensation from God after I lost my husband,' said Mrs Chik, a Christian. The cats had been inside the foul-smelling flat since last Saturday, when solicitors sent workers to carry out the court order.
