Whale shark is a benign fish

I was shocked, outraged and deeply saddened by the photo on the front page of the South China Morning Post, on July 11.

The whale shark is a benign, plankton-eating fish. I do not see how it could have been caught by a conventional hooked line, unless it was snagged or netted. But that is not my main concern.

Even though this fish is not yet classified as an endangered species, the taking of one like this is akin to taking whales or dolphins. Are fishermen in Hong Kong educated in any aspect of conservation? Clearly this issue is one which could save those very jobs that are becoming extinct. The waters around Hong Kong have been fished out.

The ocean is a remarkable, renewable source of life, but it must be given a chance if it is to survive these days of wanton pollution and slaughter of all forms of sea life.

Money is truly the patron saint of Hong Kong, and that is a shame. I would like to hear more from other concerned parties.
