The future of certain sports at the Hong Kong Sports Institute will depend on the performances of its respective athletes at next week's Olympic Games in Atlanta.

While it is unlikely that a major sport would be axed from the Institute programme, Olympic performances will have an effect on the degree of support a discipline would be entitled to.

Institute director Dr Dennis Whitby said the complete review of the programmes would be conducted soon after the Games as part of recommendations suggested by a recent consultancy report.

'As part of the consultancy recommendations, we are gong to review all the sports so that we pretty much start again,' Whitby said.

'Obviously, we will be looking at past performances and the Olympics has to be part of that.' Earlier this year, the Hong Kong Government appointed a firm to compile a report aimed at suggesting ways of improving the Institute's financial viability.

The Institute trust fund, which started at $350 million in the early '80s, is due to run dry in April, 1998.
