A decorator who hatched a 'clever scam' to acquire credit cards by using information from newly married couples was jailed for 20 months yesterday.
Wong Chi-sing, 32, copied names and addresses of couples from boards of marriage registers and sent them bogus credit card application forms, said prosecutor Winston Chan Lap-yan.
He sent out more than 1,000 letters; six victims replied, sending copies of identity cards, passbooks and tax returns to fake mail boxes set up by Wong.
He used these documents to apply for genuine bank credit cards, which he used to obtain about $42,500.
He was arrested when he collected a mock credit card planted in one of his mail boxes by the police.
Judge Fergal Sweeney told the District Court the offence was a 'clever fraud' that required elements of 'cunning and ingenuity'.
