Diana Tsang Sum-yee, who was South China Morning Post Student of the Year runner-up last year, gained A(1) in Use of English [AS], Chinese Language and Culture [AS], Physics, Chemistry and Pure Mathematics.

The outstanding student, who was one of the 'nine-As scorers' in the HKCEE two years ago, said she felt the pressure because of her previous achievements, but did not hope to get five straight As this time.

'I really didn't expect it,' said last year's president of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students' Association. 'It's hard to believe!' Diana won a three-year Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund ($200,000 each year) scholarship to study architecture at Yale University in the United States. However, she vows to come back and contribute to the territory.

'I will come back after my studies. My family is here.' Diana's best friend Grace Lui Chung-yan also obtained five As this year. They were in Use of English [AS] A(1), Chinese Language and Culture [AS] A(2), Chemistry A(1), Biology A(1), and Physics A(1).

'We have known each other for 13 years, since primary school,' said Diana. 'We scored nine As together two years ago, and I'm overwhelmed that we should have both got five As this time!' Grace, who will follow medical studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, has no worries about Hong Kong's future after 1997.

She lamented that many young people had no sense of belonging to the community and lacked knowledge about China's affairs. She hoped she was different in that respect.
