Rift looms on handover party plans
PRELIMINARY arrangements for the handover celebrations have been revealed by the Government, despite its still having to agree with Beijing on how the change of sovereignty will be marked.
A paper submitted to the Urban Council, to be discussed on Tuesday, shows that the Government wants to hold a series of cultural and entertainment shows, concerts and sporting displays.
It has asked the Urban Council to reserve most top venues, including the Hong Kong Stadium, the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, the Cultural Centre and the Coliseum.
It plans to hold a cultural and entertainment show in the stadium and a concert in the Coliseum on the eve of the handover.
But the document does not include any activities for July.
Urban Councillor Daniel Wong Kwok-tung said this suggested there might not be any joint celebrations.
