Three students from Maryknoll Convent School scored five As in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations.

The academic stars are arts students Candy Lau Li-yan, 19, and Gigi Lau Che-man, 18; and science student Carrie Wong Fung-ping, 19.

The two arts students said staying abreast of current affairs had helped them do well.

Candy scored A(1) in Economics, Mathematics and Statistics, Government and Public Administration (GPA), Use of English [AS] and Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

Classmate Gigi attained A(1) in Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, and Use of English [AS]; and A(2) in Economics and Chinese Language and Culture [AS].

'Our teachers first led the class in discussions of social issues, and then we developed a keen interest in the subject,' said Candy, a runner-up in the South China Morning Post Student of the Year Award.

'Subjects like Government and Public Administration and Geography require common sense, which comes from our knowledge of what's happening in Hong Kong.' Gigi, a pianist and clarinetist, added: 'Students should try to open up and talk about serious issues more often. Talking and communicating make you think.
