Jury makes it's video verdict

Teri Fitsell

HONGKONG'S answer to Jukebox Jury starts tonight, with local personalities being asked to sort the potential ''hit'' music videos from the ''misses'' under the watchful eye of AM Alive DJ Andy Curtis.

The panel on the first of what will be a 13-part series of World Video Jury (World 9pm) comprises Ms Keeping Posted herself Fionnuala Halligan, FM Select DJ Louis Castro and singer Andy Ingkavet, who also performs with his band M62.

The easy part for them is perching on high stools listening to three featured videos and giving them the thumbs up or down; the more energetic part comes when they have to actually get up and dance.

Time will tell if the programme itself is a hit or a miss.

* * * * COVERAGE of the women's final in the Australian Open Tennis (Prime Sports, 9.45pm) begins 12 hours after the match is played in Melbourne this morning.

So, if you don't want to know whether or not defending champion Monica Seles defeats Steffi Graf to take her third Australian open in a row, don't listen to the radio before you watch.

* * * * THE pick of today's films must be Pillow Talk (Pearl 7.35pm, ORT 105 mins), a 50s light comedy classic, and the first of Rock Hudson and perpetually pure Doris Day's many films together.

Hudson plays the philanderer, while chaste Day, with whom he shares a party line, is destined to become chased Day.

Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter provide the comic interference. The fashions are gorgeous and the sets plush.

Dated? Yes, but good fun - although did Ms Day really have to be so virginal? * * * * WORLD'S main movie For the Love of Benji (9.30pm, ORT 84 mins) also sits firmly in the family fun category. This is the second outing for the world's smartest woofer since Lassie, and the pooch certainly gets full marks for acting.

This time he's scampering through the streets of Athens, fleeing from secret agents who want the formula that's tattooed on his foot.

* * * * WOODY Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (Pearl 2pm, ORT 82 mins) is one of his best, though we did only see it in July.

Mia Farrow plays a downtrodden housewife in the 20s who goes to the movies for a little escapism and so inflames a leading man (Jeff Daniels) he steps out of the screen to woo her.

Charming, but have the tissues handy.

* * * * WORLD'S matinee Life of the Party: The Story of Beatrice (11am, ORT 100 mins) is also worth a look. It's an above-average TV movie starring Carol Burnett as Beatrice O'Reilly a one-time alcoholic who founded LA's first alcohol recovery centre for women.

Burnett is outstanding, as is Lloyd Bridges (Hot Shots) as her husband.

* * * *BASKETBALL fans should note that tomorrow's NBA Game of the Week (Pearl 11.55 am) is between the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls.
