Compaq has been hyping its new ProLiant server with a massive advertising campaign and System-Pro, its distributor, will demonstrate the ProLiant 5000 as an intranet Web server at NetAsia '96.

The server is running Novell NetWare 4.1, Oracle 2000, ManageWise, Intel LanDesk, and Compaq's own Insight Manager System-Pro will also be demonstrating tele-conferencing within an intranet using Intel's Proshare.

Compaq is lining the ProLiant 5000 up against Risc/Unix mid-range systems.

Philip Leung, vice-president and managing director of Compaq Computer East Asia Group, said: 'Customers traditionally choose systems from the Risc/Unix mid-range vendors because of the performance, scalability and availability of those systems.

'Customers pay for the proprietary nature of those systems. Today, making that trade-off is not necessarily any longer.' The ProLiant 5000 6/166, with four 166MHz Pentium Pro processors, boasts 5,676tpmC while running SQL Server 6.5 under Windows NT Server 4.0.

It claims that at US$136/tpmC, including five-year service and support, it is half the price of the competition.

For Notes applications, the 5000 performed 57 per cent better than its own ProLiant 4500 under the newly introduced NotesBench benchmark.

It almost halved the price of the 4500 running Notes mail and database and it recorded the best price/performance for any server running Windows NT Server.

With that much power, the ProLiant is great for data-intensive applications like databases and data warehousing, as well as computer-intensive applications.

For example, one of the largest home loan lenders in the United States, Countrywide Home Loans, has more than 1.3 million loans under management. It runs one of its most strategic business applications on ProLiant 5000 servers.

The NT Server and SQL Server-based hedging application calculates possible changes in interest rates and assists in the pricing of loans based on real-time fluctuations. The application performs thousands of floating-point computations to reach a solution.

On a Digital Alpha-based server, the application required 20 minutes to complete while on the ProLiant 5000 it took seven minutes.

The ProLiant 5000 offers eight times (267Mbps) the aggregate input/output capability of Pentium-based systems and ECC-protected internal data buses, giving it solid performance credentials for any I/O intensive application.

 Compaq was the first major vendor to introduce rack-mounted industry-standard servers ideal for file server consolidation. Besides ease of servicing, rack-mounting is an advantage in Hong Kong where floor space is expensive.

Compaq has also been aggressive in what it calls pre-failure warranty. Its Insight software monitors disk performance and, based on read/write failures and bad sectors, predicts future performance.

Customers can get the disk replaced before it fails, important for high availability but also a cost-saving if the disk is nearing the end of its warranty. The pre-failure warranty now covers microprocessors.

It also has optional 2+1 redundant processor power modules to boost system availability and redundant Netelligent 10/100 TX controllers.
