The last time the limelight beckoned for Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee was an ugly family row that went to court eight years ago and saw her portrayed as a gold-digger.

Mrs Ip, 46, was then the assistant director of trade.

Her husband Sammy Ip Man-ho and his brother Henry Ip Man-shan had been disinherited from a $30.5 million will, allegedly because their father Ip Ching-ping thought Regina Ip wanted a large share of the family fortune.

She accused two of her sisters-in-law, Roseanna Ip Man-sum and Marion Yip Man-hoi, of implying she was a gold-digger after they knew she was going to marry into the family.

She also accused a third sister-in-law, former legislator Dr Henrietta Ip Man-hing, of trying to turn the elder Mr Ip against her.

Mr Sammy Ip maintained the will was executed when his father was of unsound mind and under undue influence from his sisters.

It was revealed during the High Court hearing that Sammy and Regina Ip had spent $400,000 on their wedding, including a 39-table banquet, redecorating a flat, and jewellery for herself.
