Arts students at St Mary's Canossian College have proved that they can do as well as science students in examinations - even though the conditions for scoring high marks in their subjects are more vague than in science subjects.
In this year's Advanced Level Examination, Peggy Mok Pik-ki from the arts stream scored five straight A(1)s in Use of English [AS], Chinese Language and Culture [AS], Geography, Chinese Literature, and Liberal Studies [AS].
'It is difficult to score high grades in arts subjects because the marking is bound to be subjective. But we managed it, thanks to our teachers.
'And their example makes me want to become a teacher myself,' Peggy said.
Peggy believes that there may be some constraints on teaching after the handover, especially when sensitive political issues concerning China are involved, but she is not daunted.
'I am not going to distort anything. I will present the facts to my students as best I can. It will certainly be a tough job, but I have faith that I can do it.' The outstanding student will study Chinese Language in either the Chinese University of Hong Kong, or Oxford University, England.
