The Irish punt has tumbled from the top of the European currency grid to the bottom since Monday, rekindling doubts about Ireland's chances of being a founding member of the European single currency.

The punt slipped from 2.4225 deutschemarks on Monday to 2.384 by mid-trading yesterday.

It closed at a 52-week high of 2.4441 marks on July 3.
