Regco chief pays own way

Regional Council chairman Daniel Lam Wai-keung will have to pay his own air fare to Atlanta for his trip to see Hong Kong's Olympic athletes.

Mr Lam secured full Regional Council approval for an all-expenses-paid jaunt to the US at its meeting on May 30. But his sponsor, Adidas, subsequently wrote to him saying it would only pay expenses when he reached Atlanta - not the costs of getting him there.

Even an economy class ticket will cost Mr Lam, who left for Atlanta on Tuesday morning, at least $13,000.

Adidas assistant marketing manager William Chong Kam-fu said Mr Lam, who has been pictured in an Adidas jacket, was aware as early as June he would have to bear the costs of the flight himself.

Mr Chong said the daily cost of Mr Lam's stay in Atlanta was only $200 because he would sleep in the Adidas House complex, eat at corporate sponsored events and walk to the nearby Olympic site.
