The managing director of medium-sized developer HKR International, Payson Cha Mou-sing, has supported the Consumer Council's recommendations to increase competition in the housing market by selling more smaller land lots.

'The investment amount for the recent tendering of the new airport related projects is quite high,' Mr Cha said yesterday.

'It is quite difficult for medium-sized developers to bid for them.' He said he understood that the Government offered huge lots for tendering because it wanted to achieve a comprehensive planning for the sites.

The Consumer Council said the residential property market was controlled by several big developers.

It suggested the Government sell small lots to make it easier for smaller developers to enter the market.

USI Holdings chief executive Edward Cheng said yesterday that land prices would depend on demand and supply, not necessarily on the land lot size.
