Scheduling complications have forced the cancellation of September's Hong Kong leg of the WTA Tour, organisers said yesterday. The US$450,000 Hong Kong Open was supposed to feature former French Open champion Mary Pierce, American Chanda Rubin and Wimbledon semi-finalist Kimiko Date of Japan. Following discussions held at Wimbledon last week, between tournament organisers and the Corel WTA Tour, a decision was made to remove the Tier IIA event from the WTA calendar. Organisers said there had been problems with confirming the participation of designated star players. These problems were compounded by the Olympic Games and the rescheduling of other Tour events.
