The first Chinese-language magazine for gay men and lesbians has hit the newsstands in an effort to open up discussion on homosexuality before the handover.
G&L, published bimonthly in Taipei, is expected to sell about 3,500 copies in the territory at $60 each. It already sells about 18,000 copies in Taiwan.
G&L president Cheryl Hon said the title could be interpreted as standing for 'Gays and Lesbians', 'Gentlemen and Ladies', or 'Glory and Liberty'.
She said the magazine was aimed at enhancing understanding between people with different sexual preferences.
Local gay groups have welcomed the launch.
'The social atmosphere and political climate in the territory are ready for a gay magazine. G&L will help our culture to prosper,' said Michael Lai of the Ten Percent Club.
