Ian Gardner, Lakewood's general manager, says the 12,000-square-foot clubhouse will become the headquarters for a golf academy in about a year.
The academy will be a residential golf school operated by the Club Corporation of America.
He said the academy would cater to beginner golfers and those with low handicaps.
'It is something that really hasn't been provided for much in this region and it has been really successful in Europe and the United States,' Mr Gardner said.
'The game is growing rapidly in the region and, with the opening of the public course in Hong Kong [Kau Sai Chau], it has blossomed into quite a popular sport. Good professional teaching services are under-supplied and we hope to fill that gap.' Mr Gardner said today's ceremonies marked the start of phase two of the development which will include country club facilities, tennis and squash courts, karaoke rooms, saunas, massage and restaurants.
The clubhouse was designed by architect Laurence Loh, a member of the Lakewood board of governors.
