INCREASED campus security would not have saved the life of student Miss Sylvia Leung Sze-hon, police said in response to a call by the victim's father, Hongkong Immigration Director Mr Laurence Leung Ming-yin.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sergeant Michael Eastham said that ''in this particular instance, at least our theory is that somebody specifically targeted her''.
''Whether she was on the campus or whether she was on the street, I doubt it would have made much difference,'' he said.
Ms Leung, 22 and a future singer, was stabbed last Sunday in the car park of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
Sergeant Eastham said: ''I have received 100 tips and leads - and we must proceed cautiously. In cases like this, we always proceed with a process of elimination.'' He added that the possibilities of a sexual assault, botched robbery, random attack and ''evidence of any kind of love triangle'' had, for the most part, been eliminated.
Mr Leung offered his advice to step up security at his daughter's funeral early yesterday morning Hongkong time.
