Customs officials at the land border are to crack down on loads marked as 'raw materials' or 'scrap' to prevent the territory being used as a rubbish dump.
Environmental protection staff visited the checkpoints at Man Kam To, Shataukok and Lok Ma Chau yesterday to discuss how Customs can stop the passage of bogus recycling consignments.
Environmental group Green Power called for acting environmental director Mike Stokoe's resignation yesterday and held a banner outside department headquarters saying 'M. Stokoe go home'.
Mr Stokoe had been responsible for several 'wrong' policies, said Green Power's Alexander Yan Wing-lok.
The stepped-up action followed unconfirmed reports that nine loads of foreign metal and plastic scrap had been returned to Hong Kong after Shenzhen authorities found they were mixed with medical and industrial waste.
China banned all imports for disposal from April 1. Materials for recycling now need an import permit.
