New faces turn to the old hands

PROFESSIONALS from the local music scene will share their expertise with a group of tertiary students in the staging of two musical performances in March.

The production, Here and Now - Hongkong 1993, will be the first production organised by the Hongkong Music Alliance for Students of Tertiary Institutes since it was established in 1992.

The group's objective is to promote local original song-writing, portray life in Hongkong and give audiences a chance to ponder relationships in the territory.

''We believe this is the first time students in Hongkong have organised a musical function with the guidance of celebrities from the music world,'' said Ms Patricia Lam, promotions secretary for the Hongkong Music Alliance for Students of Tertiary Institutes.

The musical will be a multi-media stage production, consisting of all new, original songs, accompanied by dance, drama and slides.

It will consist of four episodes - love, campus, society and politics. Each will have its own plot and tone colour and will be linked to form a complete musical.

Each section will feature about four songs, presented by students and singers on the local music scene. Actors and dancers will be drawn from the student body and from local drama and dance companies.

The show's director, Mr Chung Chi-wing, and choreographer, Mr Kenneth Kwong Kwok-keung, will work with visual effects people to combine songs, drama, dance and slides for a multi-media musical.

Song writers, Mr Jolland Chan and Mr Leung Wai-man; composer, Dr John Chen; producer, composer and arranger, Mr Kenneth Fong and manager of the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the Chinese University of Hongkong, Mr Hardy Tsoi, have been invited to give advice and assist in the production.

The musical will be held at the Academic Community Hall of the Baptist College on March 13 and at the Lyric Theatre of the Hongkong Academy for Performing Arts on March 21.

It is expected that about 2,600 will attend the production.

Performers and organisers hope that tertiary and secondary students, those who support cultural creativity and original song-writing, and also music professionals will attend the show.

Tickets are $40 for the performance at the AC Hall and $70, $50 and $45 (students) for the performance at the APA. They will be available through URBTIX outlets.
