LAVISH costumes and sets will make the Hongkong Ballet's forthcoming production of Cinderella, one of its most visually extravagant.
Flamboyant Russian designer Alexandre Vassiliev was commissioned to come up with colourful, imaginative sets and costumes for the performance, part of the 1993 Hongkong Arts Festival, in a show that has been described as ''ideal to take overseas''.
As our sneak preview reveals, the costumes must outrank anything the company has done before.
According to Ms Linda MacAngus, of the Hongkong Ballet, ticket sales have so far gone ''extremely well''. She was sure the show would be one of the group's most successful.
''It will look quite spectacular, given the types of sets and costumes we are using. While the ballet cannot disclose figures of any of the shows, let's just say Vassiliev did very well with what he had,'' she said.
The classic story of a beautiful, poor girl, her two ugly stepsisters, a fairy godmother and a magical pair of glass slippers will be shown at various venues from Friday to February 20. The lead roles will be played by So Hon-wah and Eriko Ochiai.
