Fisheries officers declared the massive Sun fish found dead in Victoria Harbour too toxic to eat and too rotten for display.
On Wednesday, Marine police hauled the 1.6-metre, 300 kilogram fish out of the waters off Tsim Sha Tsui.
Agriculture and Fisheries Department acting senior fisheries officer, Leung Siu-fai, said the rope-bound fish had probably been caught by fishermen who had ditched it after not finding buyers.
'I do not recommend people in Hong Kong eat it. Japanese and Taiwanese say it is edible. But according to books for South China fish it is not edible because of its diet - jellyfish. They could contain toxic substances in their tissues.' Mr Leung said Sun fish were found in the South China sea, but were rarely caught by fishermen.
The Urban Services Department destroyed the fish.
