I am writing in response to Ian Watson's letter titled 'Legislation needed to stem tide of junk faxes' (South China Morning Post, July 16).

Mr Watson detailed in his letter the nuisance caused by 'junk faxes' to individuals and businesses. He also pointed out there is no legislation prohibiting the distribution of unsolicited faxes. Hongkong Telecom has been helping its customers solve this problem despite the absence of regulations to deter such abuse of the network.

As another of your readers, Cara Choy, referred to in her letter 'Happy ending to fax saga' (South China Morning Post, July 22), customers who approach the company for assistance are advised to redirect unsolicited faxes to our Faxline 2824-0999 or mail them to Customer Satisfaction, Hongkong Telecom, GPO Box 9896.

We will warn senders of unsolicited faxes and those who persist may face suspension of service. Customers may also be interested to know that Hongkong Telecom will be introducing a new Calling Number Display service, which gives users the choice of not taking a call whose originating number is not disclosed.

This feature can help deter nuisance phone calls and junk faxes.
