The murder trial of seven Vietnamese hit further problems yesterday when the prosecution revealed 'highly prejudicial' evidence to the jury.

The already once-delayed High Court trial of seven inmates from the High Island detention centre ground to a halt when prosecutor William Lam mentioned the evidence in his opening speech.

Keith Oderberg, defending, demanded that Mr Justice Arthur Leong Shiu-chung dismiss the jury.

It was excused for an hour while the defence and prosecution argued their cases. When the judge ruled in favour of the defence, the newly appointed jury was dismissed.

'You have heard certain statements which are not admissible in a court of law,' Mr Justice Leong told the jury.

'It would be highly prejudicial to continue. I have no alternative but to discharge you.' The defendants are charged with murdering a fellow inmate and wounding two others.

On Monday, an administrative bungle sent potential jurors home minutes before they were to appear in court.
