If you ever want to experience the thrills of motor racing, just turn up on Shek O Road one night, especially during the weekends, or board one of the minibuses. At each corner, the drivers seem to be going faster and while some passengers may find this exciting, such an experience soon loses its appeal when the vehicle has a near collision with an approaching bus or car. Will some people have to see the gory results of a head-on collision, before they realise this sort of behaviour is not funny or exciting? I have seen the results of crashes and car racing festivities that went terribly wrong and it has made me wonder what can be done about it. This year alone I have witnessed five car crashes and one fatality. . I believe that some accidents are caused by drivers who are intoxicated with alcohol and this can leave innocent motorists as victims. Racing teams speed along the winding Shek O Road. Our Government has a development plan for Shek O, which it hopes will make weekends there more enjoyable. We even have teams of police officers in the village making sure that parking laws are obeyed, but what use is all this attention, if just travelling to Shek O can cost you your life?
