Local television stations have taken Olympics coverage to a new low with their handling of a performance by Chan Sau-ying, the flag-bearer of the Hong Kong team. The only local track athlete at the games, she came last in the 110 metres hurdles. Nevertheless, TVB Jade grabbed her for an on-the-spot interview. But it all fell apart when the presenter asked her a question. Chan put her head in her hands and started to sniffle. Dropping to her knees, Chan started to wail, and then sunk even further and disappeared behind the two-foot wall they were standing behind. This lasted about 45 seconds, with the presenter apparently struck dumb and frozen. There was no attempt to cut away, and no comment from the studio. So much for on-the-ball reporting.
