STUDENTS waiting for their Certificate of Education Examination results to be announced on Wednesday may be confused by admission procedures or overcome by despair if they fail, social workers have warned.
Leading youth counselling groups are bracing to help the 120,000 students sitting this year's exam.
Only 20 per cent of candidates will gain a government-subsided place in secondary schools for the 1996-97 academic year.
The successful few can go on to Forms Six and Seven, eventually sit their A levels and vie for a university place.
The rest of the students may need intensive counselling and advice to prevent any suicide attempts, a Hok Yau Club spokesman said.
Club student guidance centre director Ng Tak-kay said he expected confusion when the results were published.
