Compaq Armada laptops aimed at first-time buyers
Compaq has phased out its low-end Contura notebook model in favour of an innovative range of all-Pentium modular machines to be released in Hong Kong this month.
William Chan, product marketing manager for Compaq Hong Kong, said the Armada series would deliver a sensible, affordable set of functions to first-time notebook computer buyers.
He said many repeat customers may be attracted to the Armada's mix-and-match approach of key components, but Compaq expected the majority of Armada users to be notebook novices.
While notebook manufacturers such as IBM, Toshiba and NEC have spoken of modular components within previous notebook releases - mainly with battery pack and hard disk unit upgrades - Compaq has set out to market the Armada in three separate configurations.
It is similar to the docking station approach to connectivity expansion that has become a regular option for notebook buyers with most major designers.
Compaq also employs a similar strategy to the Digital HiNote Ultra, which offers a slimline Mobile Multimedia Module for CD-ROM access.
