Officials have bowed to the wishes of Lee Lai-shan and Cheung Chau residents and will have Hong Kong's Olympic gold medallist home earlier than planned tomorrow to receive the adulation of her community. At San San's request, and pressure from island leaders, the Government has agreed to curtail its home-coming celebrations. The original plan involved San San waiting at Kai Tak airport for 11/2 hours for her teammates on a later flight. Now she will go straight into a press conference before being whisked to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui to be greeted by hundreds of children from youth groups. Appropriately, her journey from the airport includes Olympic Avenue. Police expect a crowd of 10,000 to pack the area around the Cultural Centre to greet San San. After the reception, San San, her family and her fellow sailboard Olympian, Sam Wong Tak-sum, will walk to the Kowloon Public Pier where they will board a catamaran, laid on by Hong Kong Ferry, for the 40-minute trip to Cheung Chau and festivities there. Under the original proposal, Cheung Chau residents would have been kept waiting until midnight for San San's return. Now, if her flight arrives on time at 7.30 pm, she will be home by 10.30 pm. Vice-President of the Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee Vivien Fung said: 'We have talked to San San and she would like to get back to Cheung Chau as soon as possible because the community has made a lot of arrangements for her reception.' The deputy Secretary for Broadcasting, Culture and Sports, Benjamin Tang Kwok-bun, said there was no question of the Government trying to 'steal' the welcome-home celebration from the islanders. He said special arrangements had been made for island representatives to join the official party greeting San San at Kai Tak and at the Cultural Centre. Acting Governor Anson Chan Fang On-sang will host a cocktail party for Hong Kong's 23 Olympians and government officials on Friday at her Victoria House residence on The Peak. Officials from Xinhua (the New China News Agency) will be invited.
