Whilst I seldom find myself in agreement with the views expressed by my old friend Kevin Sinclair, I find it impossible not to applaud his tribute (South China Morning Post, August 5) to Sonny Sales, the sports official who has done more than any other single person to win for Hong Kong some of the finest sports and leisure facilities in the world. Back in my own time as a sports commentator, I crossed swords with the single-minded Mr Sales and always found him to be a worthy and fair-minded opponent. His contribution to Hong Kong and regional sport is impossible to exaggerate. His bravery at the Munich Olympics when he single-handedly confronted the terrorists and escorted the Hong Kong team out of danger is the stuff of legend. It is high time some recognition was afforded to this exceptional man. TED THOMAS Causeway Bay
