A senior Chinese official yesterday gave another indication Beijing was willing to improve its icy relations with pro-democracy politicians. Director of the Hong Kong branch of Xinhua (the New China News Agency) Zhou Nan said Beijing wanted all Hong Kong people, no matter what views they held, to contribute to the return of the territory to China. 'There are some people who have taken the wrong path for some time and recognise that irrational confrontation is not supported by the public and there is no future for them, and they have indicated their willingness to change. We welcome them if they really change . . . not only in words but in deeds,' he said. On Saturday, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said China was willing to talk to people holding different views on democratic development.
