Police are searching for a teenage mother who disappeared after leaving her one-month-old daughter with a friend two weeks ago.

The baby's grandparents, who said they had not been aware of their daughter's pregnancy, have refused to look after the child.

They claimed they had no contact with their unmarried 19-year-old daughter. The child, who is reported to be healthy, has been placed in the care of the Chuk Yuen Children's Centre run by the Social Welfare Department.

Police said the baby was born in Kwong Wah Hospital on July 16 and was taken from there by her mother, who had provided the hospital with no information. On August 3, she left the baby with a former classmate in Tak Tin Estate, Kwun Tong, saying she would return in two days.

'She told her friend that the baby girl would be left there temporarily. She left in a hurry and her friend had no chance to ask questions,' said Senior Inspector Liu Ho-ming.

'Afterwards, there was no phone call or contact from the woman. It appeared she did not want the baby back,' he said.
