Residents of Western who enjoy reading have a grand new library in their district. The Smithfield Public Library, which opened yesterday in Kennedy Town, is the Urban Council's 35th library. It is located on the third floor of the Urban Council complex at 12K Smithfield. It covers about 800 square metres and at present has 28,000 books. The newspaper and magazine section has about 100 local and overseas titles and there is an activities room for events such as book exhibitions and video cassette programmes. To encourage the young to to use the library facilities, an attractive Children's Corner has been set up. The library is open from 10 am to 1.30 pm, and from 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm on weekdays, except Thursdays. It closes at 5 pm on Saturdays, and at 1 pm on Sundays and public holidays.
