Ofta to grant PCS licences

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (Ofta) says licences will be granted next month to the six companies who won the tender for PCS (personal communications services).

The companies are Hutchison, Pacific Link, New World, People's Phone, P-Plus and Mandarin Communications.

Ofta spokesman Davey Chung said the authority had conducted meetings with the winners in the past few weeks to 'finalise content of the licence'.

'The successful bidders are expected to honour their commitments in the applications and no material changes from the applications would be accepted,' Mr Chung said.

A PCS network was suggested by Ofta in a consultation paper to the industry in February, 1994. A total of 14 proposals for PCS networks were received by the closing date in March last year. Ofta approved six applications, a procedure ratified by the Executive Council in August last year.

It took 12 months for the Joint Liaison Group to endorse the license procedure. The JLG endorsement came in July.
