Two illegal immigrants from China who broke into Acting Governor Anson Chan Fang On-sang's residence on the Peak were arrested by police today. At 2 am the two men arrested were still being questioned by police at Mrs Chan's residence at 15 Barker Road. Police apparently sped to her home after receiving a report from her guards at about 12.30 am that two men had been spotted and were believed to be trying to commit a burglary. On arrival police arrested two men, aged 24 and 25, and allegedly found two screwdrivers and two spanners in their possession. Unconfirmed reports said Mrs Chan and her family were asleep at the time and were only woken after police had arrested the two suspected burglars. Police officers later checked the perimeter of her residence to determine there were no other illegal immigrants hiding in the grounds or nearby. Police have increased patrols on the Peak following burglaries, believed to have been committed by illegal immigrants, at the residences of Government officials and business executives.
